EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research) is an institution concerned with multidisciplinary research into sustainable materials and systems engineering. It is part of the ETH domain which is made up of the two universities in Zurich and Lausanne (the EPFL) and four national research institutes. As an independent, neutral research institution, EMPA solves selected tasks and problems of a scientific and technical nature within its sphere of activities.
